Start with the person.
A useful expression depends on who is speaking, who is listening, and what has already happened. We want context to have a place beside the words, so a reply can sound natural without flattening the relationship behind it.

The right words can make a small moment feel different.
Sometimes you understand every word in a message and still wonder what the person meant. Sometimes you know exactly what you feel, but cannot make it sound like yourself in another language. Koto begins in that space.

The name
We think of Koto as a place for the words—and the moments around them—that matter. A message is never only vocabulary. It arrives with a relationship, a tone, and a history we may only partly know. Even a simple phrase can be an opening, an uncertainty, or an invitation to ask again. Koto keeps that wider picture in view, while leaving room for another person to mean something we have not yet understood.
What we believe
The purpose of Koto is to make communication between Japanese and English feel more human. The app can help with wording, but the real exchange belongs to the people having it.
A useful expression depends on who is speaking, who is listening, and what has already happened. We want context to have a place beside the words, so a reply can sound natural without flattening the relationship behind it.
Tone and intention cannot always be read from one sentence. Understanding someone means staying curious, considering more than one possibility, and knowing when the honest answer is “we cannot tell yet.”
There is value in returning to a phrase because it helped you say something real. Koto connects asking, saving, and revisiting, but a conversation does not have to become a lesson. Sometimes getting help and moving on is enough.
Curiosity and respect make room for differences without turning another person into a puzzle to solve. That is the spirit we want every part of Koto to carry.
Meet Kiko
Kiko is Koto’s small companion, appearing in moments when a little warmth or encouragement helps. In the app, Kiko makes space for curiosity, progress, and a fresh start. The character is not a judge of how well anyone speaks, and learning is not measured by how often Kiko appears. For this story, we see Kiko as a quiet reminder that it is all right to ask, to try, and to keep listening.
Curious. Encouraging. Here when it matters.

A note from Koto
We hope Koto helps you feel a little closer to the people around you—whether you’re starting a conversation, finding the right words, or trying to understand someone better.
More than learning a language, we hope you find new friendships, stronger relationships, and more moments of understanding along the way.
